This scenario has about 8 possible scoring points. I got five of them this way:

1st scorepoint: at the wall I asked Mr. Baz for some stories.
There's a funny moment here: after you have your conversation, Baz's relative Shakeel decides to go running down the road. If you follow him, you see he runs right through the checkpoint.

2nd scorepoint: I then tried helping Fatima and then delivered medicine for Shakeel. Name reminds me of the basketball player :)

3rd scorepoint: I listened to Fahtima talk about her son

4th point: I got Omri to help.

5th point: Leah talked about a story about Leah's friend and how we mustn't close ourselves off.

The game gives you more credit if you write 3 highly newsworthy sections in your article. 2 very highly newsworthy quotes are the 2 stories from Baz.

PEACE

This is interesting. Or would you search for published poetry on the web?

-I am so excited that you went to The Working Boys...

-I am so excited that you went to The Working Boys Center! I can't wait to talk to you more about it!

-I agree that blogging is great for people who like to write.

-Isn't it funny that students lacked tech skills? I feel like it is often stressed how savvy kids are...still, many kids do not have the resources. It would be interesting to consider ways that kids/schools without the resources could still benefit from a technology-friendly curriculum. Good luck with your grant! I appreciate your skepticism.

-I am excited to learn how to use podcasts.

-I agree with you about pen and paper writing. I still have students that don't know how to send an email attachment! It seems unfair, especially for my students in poverty, to be so exclusively digital because it does turn some people off. What's funny about all of this is that my school is pushing technology in a big big way, but like you, we have very limited resources! What was really odd was that I came from Joe's blog, and he talks about this as well, from the total opposite viewpoint. I wonder if you feel similarily on some things to him or not. Maybe we'll talk about it in class. Either way, it really is amazing how we are able to connect to such a wide range of possibilities, information and people through the internet and how we can bring that to our students so easily...I remember when schools were so excited to get their first computer lab. I think there's so much potential there... everyone has a story to tell, and even if they think they don't, listening to other people's stories is a great way to get them thinking and reminded of their own. I definitely hear you about the logistical concerns-- especially making sure that there's access to computers, that's kind of a major deal. But I bet you'll figure it out and that it'll be a huge success and that your teacher will think it's so cool that she'll keep doing it next year after you're gone. :) Good luck!

The opportunity you had in that particular writing...

The opportunity you had in that particular writing class sounds fantastic, but I think that it is geared towards those who enjoy writing. Personally, if I knew that 15 other people were going to read every piece of writing I put out there during the course of a semester, I would drop the class. It seems very intimidating and daunting. For high school students, I am still-on-the-fence about peer editing in the regular classroom.

Peer-editing can create an uncomfortable situation for many students. Certainly most students are a little uneasy about sharing their work with their peers. There are so many social issues going on among them that I can't help but think about how much they think about what others think. Ahh! For strong writers, they might feel that peer editing is a waste of their time. Weaker writers might be so embarrassed in their writing that they simply shut-down. I struggle with this because I agree that the audience should be bigger than the teacher, but I just don't know the best way to make this happen.

One final comment: I think it is very cool that you were able to assemble a portfolio for your class, but I am a little confused. You said that the instructor ensured that all of your writing was put into the portfolio. Isn't a portfolio supposed to be a collection of some of students' best writing--not all of it? I may not fully understand the idea, that is why I ask.
